Continued Next Issue, Perhaps

As longtime readers know, especially after my series last year, I really like comic books. I started getting them even before I could read. Heck, they are the reason I was able to read when I started kindergarten. For over thirty years now, I have been getting the majority of my comic books from Page 3 GameZone. I was able to walk over to their original downtown Pikeville location after classes, if I wanted to. They were a reason for me to leave the house during my 'bad times' in the late 90s. They even managed to get a selection of recent comics when I lost so much in 2003. I wound up not buying any for a few reasons, but they tried to help me. I got to know the owner and many of the employees over the years. I have even helped out a few times with some of the work. I usually go one a week, but I didn't the week of February 12. Due to a shipping error, none of my titles were coming in that week, but would be shipped with the next order. One February 15, the store was just one of the many places affected by the recent floods. You may have seen the store in footage on social media or on WSAZ news.  For some reason, place north of Pikeville along the river were hit harder than most places just south of town. I know it might not be the best thing to single out just one place that got hit, but it the one that is affecting me the most.
[Side note: I wasn't affected by the flooding, neither my home nor my own store.  However, I almost had a problem that day. I went to Pikeville to shop and have my store, Booknotes, open for part of the day, thinking that there would be 2-3 inches of rain, with the worse falling to the north and west with clearing by the early afternoon. I closed soon after my only browser of the day (from the Wheelwright area no less) and the first warnings were issued. Rain was already running down the hills, ditches were overflowing, and creeks were rising, although some weren't getting as high as expected.  Rain water was already running down the street by the time I got home. Barely twenty minutes later, a landslide up the road caused muddy water to wash down the street in front of my place and into the ditch/small creek next to the parking lot. It never flowed over its banks. Turns out, the system slowed down some, dumping over four inches of rain far south of where it was forecast. The system didn't start pushing north into the mid-to-late afternoon. I might not have been able to have gotten home in time if I hadn't left as early as I did.  Strangely enough, the forecast for Sunday was very accurate, with the rain and snow coming in at about the same time as predicted.]
I haven't been able to drive past Page 3 since then, taking a slight detour when necessary.  That stretch of road wasn't in too good a shape anyway those first few days.  It took awhile before they posted anything about how they were doing.  The main floor looked to be in fairly good shape, as only a few inches of water or so came in. The lower area was hit harder, probably taking in a few feet or so.  That area was where they stored most of the older comic books, as where the current titles were put on display.  While they have spread out to many more things than just comics, this will still hit them hard, along with all the other things they lost. As of yet, I haven't reached out to them. On the one hand, I want to help them, but I don't know how. Most of the ideas I've had come off as too self-serving, anything to help me get my comics back again as quickly as possible. My mother even suggested I should try to start selling comics at my store.  Not only would that be very rude to Page 3, whose owner has bought from me before, but it also wouldn't be that feasible, as Page 3 could be open again by the time I could start receiving given the three month lead time and the fragmented market currently in place. Yes, I would be the only one in the area selling, as the only other place started by a former Page 3 manager got hit just as bad, but it would be unfair considering all they have done for me over the decades. On the other hand, I don't want to help. I'm not good in very dirty, messy situations. I am not good at cleaning.  I'm better at organizing. Seeing so much loss and destruction could be a trigger for my own losses to floods, twice, of almost everything I had. Besides, I still have my own store to run. Sure, I might not have that much business at any one time, and I have someone to watch it when I'm not there, but active cleaning is just not something I like to do. I want and need to do something more than just offer condolences, but nothing feels right. I really need to say something, and soon, but I don't know what that should be.

Let's Rap about That

I liked the most recent Halftime Show at the recent championship football game, the one whose name I won't mention.  Many people I know hated it.  They said it was too much rap, and that they had a hard time understanding the words. Yes, Kendrick Lamar does have that style, but it works for him. I found the show way more interesting than other previous shows. There was a message going on beyond just the usual antics of performing. The nods to both prison and video games gave a depth to what was being performed, as well as the asides by "Uncle" Same Jackson, especially in the lead up to the smash hit "Not Like Us." The show capped off a great week for Lamar after he won the "Record of the Year" and "Song of the Year" Grammies. Some people may have been surprised at the former, but I would have bet that he was the favorite for that award, with the closest competition being "Espresso" and "Good Luck, Babe!" The latter award was a surprise, as I felt that other songs had a bit of an edge. Maybe Drake does have some ground to stand on in his lawsuit, considering who else won that night.  I don't want to be a conspiracy theorist here, but someone could find evidence about something. Anyway, I liked "Not Like Us" ever since I heard the 'radio edit' on the only local channel that would play it. Only satellite radio would play the original, and I never seemed to have the rap channels whenever I got a trial when the song was popular. (Side note:  I currently have the Chris Stapleton channel for free on SiriusXM until the start of March. Why just the one channel, and why this one? Same thing happened last year with Kenny Chesney.) It might surprise some that I actually like some rap music. While it is not my most favorite genre, up until a few years ago, I liked rap better than most country songs. Frankly, I'm surprised about how much my tastes have changed lately. I am from the generation when rap music finally started to crossover into pop music. Well before the stereotypical "Baby Got Back," but not by too much. (Another side note:  Why is "Baby Got Back" such a clichรฉ for men of my age as the go-to early rap song? It wasn't the first song with a rap in it to go to number one ["Rapture" Blondie]. Or even the first full rap song ["Ice Ice Baby" Vanilla Ice]. Or even the first rap song to go to number one that year ["Jump" Kriss Kross, who stayed at number one for two months in 1992]. It was just a song about a guy into backsides of women.) I even bought a few cassette/CD singles back then of rap songs, as I rarely liked rap enough to get a whole album. (Again: I miss physical song singles.  I didn't have any sort of device when digital music started taking off, so I have yet to get any song of music that way.  I haven't even used any of the free trials of iTunes after getting any of my MacBooks or iPhones. [Or any other Apple service, but that is beside the point.] I just don't feel like listening/purchasing music that way. {The last single I remember buying was "Get Together" by Madonna.  It featured multiple remix of the song.  My favorite off of her Confessions on the Dance Floor, which is getting a sequel later this year.}) So, I enjoy the occasional rap song. I don't get to hear them too often, as my main radio station doesn't really play rap any more, a second has unfortunately gone all country, and the other two have been staticky the last few months and I rarely get a clear signal unless I'm really close to the tower. Still, I am open to hearing more rap, even if it is just the 'clean radio edit.' Even I am not a big enough fan to enjoy too much of the unedited versions. A few of those go too far even for me. Especially if I try to sing along. Then I would have to self edit. A few times, I have accidentally listened to the original version of rap songs in the car while my mother is in the front seat. At least she usually turns her hearing aides down, but I still feel a little self-conscious whenever it happens.

One Letter Off Song Titles, 2024

It's time for the final puzzle celebrating the top songs of 2024.  This time around I will be doing "One Letter Off." I have switched one letter in a song title with a different one.  Then, I describe what the new song will be about after the switch.  For example, if the clue was 'a ride-sharing service driver is worried after his last passenger had a horrible case of flatulence and now he can't figure out what to do about the smell in his vehicle before he picks up his next rider.' Your answer would be "Fart Car," which is one letter off from "Fast Car" by Luke Combs.  Your task is to figure out both the new title and the original one, but I will give you the artist as an extra hint. At the bottom of the list, there is a bonus section of songs where I have either added (+) or removed (-) a letter instead, but you still need to guess the title.  Answers are at the bottom of the page.

  1. A man confides that he is gaslighting his girlfriend. Specifically, he is changing the amount of her medication without her knowing it, causing her to doubt just how well she is feeling. (Teddy Swims)
  2. He is so enthralled by the latest designs in beachwear, as he feels they are so exquisite.  He really likes the new string bikinis and flip-flops. (Benson Boone)
  3. A man is ranking his favorite types of candy, in reverse order.  Finally, he reveals his number choice at the end of the song. (Hozier)
  4. A girl is mad from what she is being served every day at camp in July.  She really hates the breakfast menu--only oatmeal, an it's very thin at that. (Taylor Swift)
  5. A man has taken some psychedelics, and the experience is leaving him in a strange mood.  For instance, instead of seeing blue when he looks up, he sees a clash of bold and vibrant colors almost fighting it out for dominance. (Zach Bryan)
  6. When asking for his hot dog at a local food truck, a man asks for a particular topping. His dog has to be loaded with a gooey mix of carrots and cabbage. So much so, that it drowns the hot dog. (Benson Boone)
  7. A woman gets a weird feeling that something good is going to happen, like perhaps meeting the new love of her life.  However, she fears that something bad could happen instead. (Billie Eilish)
  8. A new business has open up in town. It is a speed delivery service for headwear. Their jingle is quite memorable. (Chapell Roan)
  9. The lead detective is stumped with his latest murder case. The victim was found in a wine cellar, a puncture wound through the heart. The weapon appears to be the spigot from one of the barrels used to get the wine out.  But who could have done it? (Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars)
  10. A young athlete is so nervous about her latest meet event.  To calm her nerves, she is sleeping at the field where the meet is going to take place. (HARDY)
  11. A woman gushes about her love of thin cookies.  Her most favorite are the vanilla-flavored ones, frequently used in banana puddings. (Tyla)
  12. All of the poet/troubadours in the region have banded together to form a union. Their first act was to declare the best quills come from geese and those from other common fowl could not be used. (Billie Eilish)
  13. A band of "Dungeons & Dragons" players encounter a tiny slime creature in their campaign.  Rather than disposing of it, they adopt it a a mascot, showering it with love and attention. (Paul Russel)
  14. A woman discovers that she can't sleep on a regular mattress. In fact, she can only use natural organic materials from certain birds.  Nothing else will do. (Taylor Swift)
BONUS SECTION
  1. Doctors at the hospital are so swamped with respiratory illnesses that they have to find a unique way to triage patients. They use nasal swabs to test mucus and separate patients with similar tests. (Kendrick Lamar, +)
  2. In fact, the doctors are starting to notice that this sort of thing is happening on a yearly basis. They soon come up with a name for that time. (Noah Kahan, -)
  3. Two supervillains realize that they are care deeply with each other.  However, they need to be kinder both to themselves and each other before they can start a relationship. (Ariana Grande, -)
  4. Oh no! Someone has defaced my car by covering the vehicle with small yellow stickers depicting a happy face. (Kane Brown and Marshmello, +)
  5. A man is looking for a place to barrow some money.  Kind people point to a bank that offers a good interest rate. (Bailey Zimmerman, +)

Emoji Song Titles, 2024 Edition

This is the second round of puzzles based on song titles.  Below, you will see a set of emojis. Your job is to guess the song title and artist that the emojis represent.  For example, if you saw ๐Ÿ’๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒผ, your answer would be "Flowers" by Miley Cyrus. Each of the songs used were from 2024, but not necessarily a huge hit.  Not every song can be easily converted, so I had to dig deep. Also, I had to use some puns and other techniques to get some of the puzzles to work. Answers can be found at the bottom of the page. Enjoy.

Just Another Boring Birthday

So, my birthday is coming up this weekend, and I am not expecting too much out of it. I've had only two actual birthday parties in my entire life, both when I was a kid.  The first one I remember was from just before I started school, about four or five. It was technically just relatives, mostly adults, a few kids most older than me. I got my only Lego set that year.  One of the older kids built it for me, but the instructions were thrown away. This meant that I could never recreate the build if I ever took it apart. I did, and the space lander or whatever was never the same. While I love building stuff, memos never got me any Lego or any other sort of building set. I asked once, but I was near the upper limit of the age range by then. The other party I had was in sixth grade. I was planning on something grand, but things got out of hand. I left to pick up my weekly comic books at the Osborne drugstore just as the guests started to arrive, with some friends of theirs that I probably shouldn't had included. By the time I got back, there was no way I could control the chaos.  I had invited my three closest friends to the party.  My best one declined. A second one left after a short time because he felt uncomfortable. This left my most boring friend. Fortunately, I also invited his younger brother, who was a little quiet but much cooler in my opinion. As evidence, that brother is now a Border Patrol agent. Every other birthday when a was a kid happened in the middle of either a snow event, a flu event, or some combination of the two, preventing any school-connected party from happening. I almost had something in high school. There was a girls' basketball game where I would be playing with the band.  The game got called off at the last minute, so I was stuck there while my mom was part of a band boosters meeting with other parents.  At least it was a mild night standing outside. Not that not having a party was good either.  One Sunday birthday, I stared out the window watching chipmunks play in the snow for an hour, while waiting for the gifts and cake later that afternoon. Another time, I had my mom hide my gifts around the house for me to find in a treasure hunt. One of my gifts that year was a book on etiquette. Ugh. Seventh or eighth grade I think. College wasn't any better.  My birthday fell on the weekend the first two years, so I couldn't contact the few people I still knew for anything. For my last two years, I had no one to talk to so nothing then either. At least I was at school. I may have stolen away to pick up comic books one of those years, even though my mom didn't like it when I did that. Nothing since, due to the fact I had no one to throw a party with. Not even coworkers, as my one short stint as an employee occurred during the summer. One thing I used to do was take a shopping trip close to the date.  In the late 90s, I got some great hauls.  For the last few decades, I've had to move the trip to late February or early March to avoid the snow and cold, since I travel greater distances than what I used to. My usual tradition is to get a small slice of cake, two or three servings, and prepare one of my favorite meals.  Unfortunately, my birthday is on Sunday, and I am not planning on going out that day. I don't know if I should get it early or late. Also, I was planning on going out to renew my license that Monday, meaning I really shouldn't eat some of my more "interesting" meals that could cause me a few "problems" if you know what I mean. But then, there are snow showers possible Monday morning, or maybe rain. No one is agreeing yet. This means that most of my plans for my birthday might have to be delayed as I have to schedule not only the renewal, but a book delivery that might be delayed anyway. One with some books I have been wanting. This looks like it will be another dull birthday, one where I can't seem catch a break.

An Unexpected and Uninvited Guest

So, I had a mouse in my place last wee.  This is not the first time that it has happened at either my current residence or my old home, but this time was very weird.  I don't know how the mouse got in or how long it had been there.  A nearby place has been having some work done on it.  We were in the middle of a cold snap.  I've even seen a new cat in the neighborhood hanging by the front door a few times. Maybe the mouse got in when I wasn't watching from bringing the groceries or decorations in, or possibly when taking out the trash.  I don't know.  Last Wednesday, my mother saw a mouse dart in front of her and scramble from the bathroom to the laundry room.  A bit later, it darted back. She said it was mostly grey with a bit of brown. I almost had to laugh at her from the way she was panicking, but I didn't. I was fine for the rest of the night, although she was still a little scared. The next day, I had to drive her out of my way so she could pick up some rat poison.  The place no longer carried the brand she used to like, but she picked up some cheap alternatives. She put some out just before going to bed.  I was getting ready myself, finishing up, when I heard a rustle from just outside my door.  A little bit later, the mouse scampered under the door and into my room, scurrying around my bed to the far wall.  It would then go behind my bed, along the next wall, under my armoire, and then back under the door. Until that moment, I had never known a mouse to get into my room.  It looked about the same as what my mom described. It ran into the hall, but only to return and enter my mom's room.  She was crazy.  There was no way she was going to sleep in a room where there might be a mouse, even though it may have happened before without her knowing it. I spent over twenty minutes trying to get it out from under the bed, and all of the junk she stores there.  Finally, after making as much noise and movement I could while holding the broom my mom wanted to hit the mouse over the head with, it finally ran out of the room and into a spare bedroom. I managed to shut the door to the room and watched while my mom got some boxes to place in front of it to block the gap to try and prevent the mouse from escaping. I finally got to go to bed, after 12:30, but I took me forever to go to sleep, whether from the action or the worrying over the mouse, I'm not sure. I was up at 1:00 and then maybe 2:00 (I'm not sure if I had been fully asleep yet.). The next morning, my mother called someone who works for the utilities to come in before work to fix a mousetrap for her. I could have done it. My mom thinks it from a fear of hurting my fingers.  It is more due to not wanting anything too violent to happen to the poor mouse. He came in, and fixed the trap, with my mom placing it into a torn up cardboard box to make it easier to dispose of the mouse once caught. We went to work, only to leave early when the snow hit. (We took the longer way home, via the new road at Harold rather than Abner in case the roads got bad.  They didn't appear to be so, but it did feel slightly safer.) The trap was still empty, although there were some cat paw marks in the snow on the porch.  Later that night, about 10: 45 or so, I heard some metal being moved.  A few seconds later, there were a series of loud bounces. I got up and saw the trap.  It had gone off when the mouse was captured. It was such a strong bounce that it was over a foot away from the box where it had been. One of the mouse's rear legs was still twitching. My mom got to work disposing of both the trap, and then the box, placing everything in bags and taking them outside.  She then mopped the vinyl floors just to make sure there was nothing on them, even though she knew that the fumes could keep me awake. I would have helped, but I just couldn't look at the poor thing the way it was. It was sort of cute the previous night. I just couldn't do it.  There have been no sightings since, although the poison is still out just in case. At least if the poison works, I won't have to see its effects. I hope there aren't any more of them.  Please.
